NL 2022: Gander

Yes, we saw Come From Away, once live, once on TV, and we've seen the doc about the real people it is based on. However, we would have wanted to come here regardless; my father often talked about transatlantic jets he was travelling on refuelling here in the 1960s, he made it sound like a special place.

An art exhibit which features a chunk of steel from the old World Trade Center is displayed outside the Gander Town Hall. Much to our delight, Brian Williams, the Town of Gander's Tourism Development Officer, emerged from the building shortly after we arrived. He told us more about Gander's role post 9/11, and talked specifically about the exhibit.

Later after dinner at Rosie's Restaurant and Bakery, we ran into the police chief from the 9/11 era who we saw in the doc about Come From Away. I mistook him for the fireman. "Hell no, that was my brother!”, he said, before generously offering to screech us in at the Legion (we politely declined, been dere , done dat).

It was a magical day on the way to Twillingate and the north coast of Newfoundland.

"On the northeast tip of North America, on an island called Newfoundland, there's an airport - it used to be one of the biggest airports in the world, and next to it is a town called Gander" then it reads Town of Gander, COME FROM AWAY, our town welcomed the world
